What is the difference between gingivitis and periodontal disease?

Gingivitis is caused when plaque and bacteria are not removed on a regular basis from your teeth and gums. Common signs of gingivitis are inflamed or swollen gums or tender gums that may bleed when you brush.

If gingivitis is left untreated, it can lead to periodontal (gum) disease. Periodontal disease is an infection that affects not only your gums but also the bone level and stability of your teeth. Untreated periodontal disease will ultimately lead to tooth loss.

Gum disease doesn't just take its toll on your oral health; numerous studies indicate that there is a connection between chronic gum infections and systemic disease such as heart disease, lung disease, stroke, diabetes, dementia, and even pregnancy complications.

At Nysa Family Dentistry, we provide all the preventive services your family needs to keep your mouth healthy and free of disease. Aside from conscientious oral hygiene, dental exams and professional cleanings are your best bet for avoiding problems like gum disease and decay.

If you are experiencing symptoms of gingivitis, please call our Frisco, TX dental office to arrange a cleaning with our trained hygienist. She will clean your teeth thoroughly and provide tips on the best practices for a healthy smile.

“Dr. Anu Amara is amazing! She knows how to keep patients at ease and always keeps a conversation going during a procedure to ensure the patient is okay and calm. I've not had any major problems during or after any of my procedures. They make sure that they're there for patients and answer any questions we may have. I definitely refer Dr. Anu Amara's practice to friends and family. Her practice is very welcoming and friendly.”
